5/7 Blog 6: Confusion.
First this week, I watched this video to get an understanding of C position to try to improve my horrendous finger positioning. It also taught me note durations and how much certain notes were "worth" in time.
I have made progress with Für Elise this week. Not a lot, but it still counts. I was eager to start learning this song, so I decided to make sense of the sheet music as I went. What could go wrong (note the foreshadowing)? I quickly became confused; I did NOT know that once an accidental like a sharp, flat, or natural was used, it was in effect for the rest of the bar. I ended up learning the first part of the song all wrong. Then I realized that the natural ♮ sign was there for a reason. After some googling, I realized how stupid I was being. After relearning the first few notes, I became confused again. Not very surprising, I know.
The very last note of the bar was the culprit. WHAT DO I EVEN PLAY?! It was much higher up from the bass staff and I did not know why. I thought it was middle C at first but then I began doubting myself. After driving myself insane, I decided to ask my friend for help. He then told me it WAS middle C after all. C flat, to be specific. It would therefore just be B major, and with that, the headache subsided for now. All I could get down were the first four bars and my timing of the notes were a little rough, but I am not complaining. I am further along than I thought I would get to be honest, even if it just consisted of trying and failing this seemingly simple song fifty times over.
It is ok Kevin. Practice makes perfect. It might seem confusing at the beginning, but constant practice will make you slowly understand the piece and musical notes.
ReplyDeleteI LOVE your commentary - I can feel the confusion. I would also not understand at all what that note is... good thing I quit piano 2 or some years ago. I think it's so cool that you're tackling Fur Elise already. I wish you luck on the journey ahead...
ReplyDeleteI play the piano as more of a hobby now, but I remember seeing notes like these for the first time and losing my mind haha, but once you get used to it you'll be fine. Good luck!
ReplyDeleteI'm also learning keyboard and jesus I am not putting in work of this quality! I'm super impressed with how much technical work you're doing. Keep it up!
